The Mediterranean garden depicts a place of
warmth and peacefulness. Courtyards with tiled floors, lime washed walls, and
terra cotta pots filled with geraniums, are some of the mainstays of this design.
The look is weathered, with paths of gravel
or brick. A dining area is shaded under a wooden pergola, draped with vines. Lawns are small, with the greenery being
junipers and topiary (shaped) bushes.
Repetition, together with symmetry, brings
unity to the area, with focal points being a statue or a small fountain.
(Symmetry is the balance between 2 opposite sides. This can be achieved by
using repetition of plants or articles in which each side looks the same; or by
using offsetting elements that make it appear
like each side is equal.)
A wrought iron gate could be the entrance
to herb garden, where a grotto (an imitation cave where you can sit and
meditate or visit) is concealed in a corner. Arched doorways and grottos add a
touch of Roman and Italian gardens.
