Garden Themes 1 of 6...The English Cottage Garden

Although the English cottage garden theme has an informal look, it is a planned design using harmoniously colored plants.
Wooden arbors, gates and fences, along with brick or stone paths, give a sense of an old fashioned country garden. Pots and furniture are of natural looking material and the plants are often the ‘old fashioned’ or heirloom variety.
The plants are a mixture of herbs and ornamental plants that are planted closely together in border beds. Fragrant roses are usually included in the selection- they need to be zone hardy and can be of the climbing or shrub variety.
Perennials of hollyhocks, carnations, peonies, foxglove, and sweet william, are suited for the planting beds, along with annuals such as violets and primroses.
Ornamental grasses can be grouped together, and thyme might be planted between stepping stones or along a path. Vines could climb up and/or over fences or arbors, and trimmed hedges may act as borders.
Trees such as ornamental crabapple and hawthorns, and shrubs such as dogwoods, add color and texture throughout the seasons
