Container Gardening - Part 1: Designing with Containers

Before you start filling your containers, decide where you want to place them in your landscape.  Take a critical look around your property and imagine how you could improve the scene.

Entrance- As visitors approach your front entry, a container with bold colors, make a warm welcome. You could have one container on your landing, or if you do not have the room, you could frame the entrance with one on each side of the steps.

Distraction- A spectacularly filled container can be a focal point, especially if in the distance, and it may direct your gaze away from an unfavorable or unsightly object.
A repetition of containers, either by pots or plants, unifies an area. They can also act as a guideline, leading your eyes toward an object, if placed midway down the sight line. Containers placed in a flower bed can hide plants that have already past their prime flowering time, such as tulips.

Softening hardscapes- Trailing plants in flat backed, hanging baskets will soften the harsh lines of a fence or wall.

Brightening a shady area- A container filled with shade tolerant annual plants, such as begonias, will give some color to an otherwise darkened area.
